Ibanez GRGR221PA-AQB — A Metal-Ready Superstrat With Real Ibanez DNA

The Ibanez GRGR221PA-AQB brings signature RG-series playability into a GIO-tier package that’s easy on the budget. Finished in Aqua Burst over a Poplar Burl Art Grain top and Okoume body, the instrument commands attention visually and sonically. Players get a pair of IBZ-6 ceramic humbuckers wired to a five-way switch for versatile tones. For those seeking genuine Ibanez speed and feel without flagship cost, this model delivers.

What Sets This Superstrat Apart

Where many guitars at this price point compromise on the neck, the GRGR221PA-AQB maintains a slim GRG-profile maple neck, finished to the standards of higher-tier RG models. The Bound Purpleheart fretboard with reversed sharktooth inlays marks the GRG line's identity. A mono-unit output jack, engineered as one piece, removes the annoyance of wobble during cable changes.

Body Construction — Bright Tone, Stage-Ready Look

Okoume provides a bright, woody response that holds its own in a band mix. The Poplar Burl Art Grain top visually elevates the guitar well beyond its price tier.

• Body Material: Okoume — bright, solid core with focused midrange
• Poplar Burl Art Grain top delivers a figured look that mimics rare burl woods, pairing with the high-gloss Aqua Burst finish for stage presence.
• Top: Poplar Burl Art Grain (Basswood) — figured finish that mimics exotic burl wood

Neck & Fingerboard — Built for Speed

A slim GRG maple neck helps your fretting hand stay relaxed in fast passages, while the bound Purpleheart fingerboard gives a durable, smooth surface for confident playing.

• Scale Length: 648 mm — standard 25.5" tension for tight low-end response
• Neck Profile: GRG Maple, 19.5 mm at 1F / 21.5 mm at 12F — slim and fast, ideal for lead playing
• Bound Purpleheart fingerboard with 400 mmR radius and 24 medium frets, comfortable for chords and solos alike.

Electronics & Hardware — Flexible Tonal Range

Two IBZ-6 ceramic humbuckers are paired with a five-way switch, offering coil splits and unique pickup blends. The F106 hardtail bridge ensures your tuning stays stable, no matter the playing style.

• Pickup Configuration: HH — dual IBZ-6 (H) passive ceramic humbuckers
• 5-way pickup selector with master volume and tone controls, enabling both subtle and aggressive tone shaping.
• Bridge: F106 hardtail with 10.5 mm string spacing — independent string-height adjustment for clean intonation

Who Should Pick Up the GRGR221PA-AQB

Those moving up from a beginner instrument into their first serious electric will find it a logical step. Metal and hard rock guitarists benefit from the fast neck, high-output pickups, and sturdy bridge for down-tuned riffs and expressive solos. Players seeking a backup or modding platform will appreciate the accessible electronics cavity.

The GIO Series — Ibanez's Gateway to the RG Line

Ibanez earned its name with the RG series, a favorite among metal and progressive musicians. Through the GIO sub-line, the brand’s design features — slim necks, sharp headstocks, aggressive styling — are offered at prices for working players. This model stands out mid-range in the GIO line, marked by its Aqua Burst finish and Poplar Burl Art Grain top.
